Four specifications determine whether one suits your cooking, and everything else on the box is largely decoration.

Capacity and Resolution

These are the two numbers that define a scale, and they trade off against each other. A scale with a high maximum capacity generally has coarser resolution; a precision scale reading to a tenth of a gram usually has a low maximum.

For general kitchen use, around five kilograms with one-gram resolution covers almost everything. For espresso, spices and yeast, a second precision scale reading to 0.1 g is genuinely useful. Ranges covering both categories, such as the Escali Scale lineup, treat them as distinct tools because one device cannot do both well.

The Four Things Worth Checking

Capacity: at least 5 kg for general cooking, more for large batches

Resolution: 1 g for kitchen work, 0.1 g for precision tasks

Platform size: wide enough to take a mixing bowl without overhang

Tare function: essential, and it should be a single obvious button

Platform Size Is Underrated

A scale with a small platform cannot take a mixing bowl, which means weighing into a smaller container and transferring, which defeats most of the convenience.

It also matters for stability. A bowl overhanging the platform is supported unevenly, and the reading suffers. Check the platform dimensions against the bowls you actually use rather than assuming.

Auto Shut-Off

Almost all digital scales switch off after a period of inactivity to preserve batteries, which is sensible and occasionally infuriating. A scale that shuts off partway through assembling a recipe loses the tare and the running total.

Longer shut-off intervals, or a model where the timeout is generous, is worth having if you tend to work slowly or get interrupted.

Display

The display should be readable from standing height with a bowl on the platform. Some designs put the display where a large bowl obscures it entirely, which is a genuine annoyance discovered after purchase.

Backlit displays help in poorly lit kitchens. Large digits help everyone.

What Not to Prioritise

Nutritional databases built into the scale, which are usually limited and quickly outdated. Bluetooth connectivity, unless you have a specific use for it. Elaborate multi-function modes that complicate a device whose job is to display a number.

Appearance matters less than platform size and readability, since the scale is a tool rather than a display piece.

One Scale or Two

Many households eventually own two: a general kitchen scale for flour, water and portions, and a small precision scale for coffee, spices and yeast.

They cost little individually and cover the whole range between them, which one device attempting both would not.

[62

post-14822","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-public
["GET
